QR Codes in Marketing
At first glance a QR code could be mistaken as a strange magic eye picture. However, Quick Response codes (QR codes) are expected to achieve widespread use moving forward in the world of marketing and communications – and for good reason. Consumers want immediate access to what’s relevant and attractive to them and QR codes make that possible.
If you’re not yet familiar with QR codes, they’re similar to barcodes used by retailers to track inventory and price products at the point of sale. The key difference is the amount of data they can hold. This ability to hold more information and their ease of use makes them an attractive and cost effective marketing tool.
Customers scan or read a QR code with their Smartphones which then directs them to specific web-based content. This opens up new instant channels for targeted digital sales promotions and product or company communications. Amongst their many uses these codes can be shared - making them viral and encouraging interaction with your brand; improve your SEO ratings and integrating with social media channels. Most importantly the results can be measured through offer redemptions and website interactions.
Here in the UK QR codes are still considered a novelty, but take Tesco in Korea for example, who have used them to create a virtual shopping mall in one of the many Korean subways, maximising this marketing opportunity to target a captive audience. People are literally using these codes to do their weekly shop as they wait for the train.
The codes can be utilised on many places from business cards and point of sale receipts, even company vehicles can carry them as part of their branded livery. The information held within the codes can include product information, company directions, special offers or promotions and even request valuable customer feedback.
The potential for QR Codes is limitless. I see this tool becoming one of the most important elements in any driven, forward thinking business’ communications mix. So maybe there is an element of business magic in these codes after all.
